Sarah Laden, still smarting from the loss of her husband and dealing with the minutia of raising two sons, confronts the loss of friendship when she discovers that her best friend, a compassionate physician and her friend's husband, also a physician, have been raping their son, Jordan.

Sarah does not intend to foster--and later adopt--the troubled eleven-year old Jordan until her own oldest son suggests it and takes active role in making it happen.

The reader is invited into a plot in which more of the abuse is unveiled piece by piece. The story meanders among the various characters' point-of-views.

The story is compelling, and the prose is good, albeit some of the point-of-view voices are not discernable enough from one another. It is clear that the author has researched the subject of child pornography and sexual abuse. However, as an author who's written on the aspect of child abuse from the aspect of family court "justice," (see PUPPET CHILDPuppet Child,) I was astonished at the large number of dedicated officials spending full-time on Jordan's case. In the years since I've become an activist on the subject, I've learned that the over-riding problem in dealing with such cases is the lack of competent personnel and the case overload of the few publicly employed professionals. Therefore, while I respect the author's study of the topic, the fictional number of characters she's presented as working on the case (and spending time in her kitchen) loses its credibility.

Most importantly, the main characters are more of cut-out figures than this story deserves. Sarah Laden has no complexity whatsoever. She could be any suburban mother whose main focus in life is food (she is a caterer.) Her eldest son, Nate, supposedly a trouble-makers, isn't that bad considering all the troubles teenagers can get into. In fact, Sarah's invasion into his privacy and his need to share with his mother personal details are quite unusual for maturing boys. [Spoiler!] Her second son, Danny, a friend of Jordan's turns out in the epilogue taking place years later to be gay. We've seen no sign of that in his growing up years, and it was absent from his attachment to the boy Jordan. Only Jordan has depth to him and the exploration into his psyche is satisfying.

That said, "The Kindness of Strangers" is one book I read to the end, which is a rare event in the piles of books that often hijack my attention, and is an indication that this novel deserves good ratings.

The bitter reviews are totally undeserved and off-base. I felt like I was reading about some other book.

The Blanchards, who were probably the worst business people in the western world decide to open a little beach bar restaurant on the island of Anguilla. Things change when they find the perfect place, but the rent is thousands per month--way too much to build a beach bar. It has to be a fancy restaurant. Did it occur to them to negotiate or look for a cheaper place? They didn't say it did. So, they start designing and planning. They soon learn that most everything has to be imported from elsewhere. Melinda flies home to Vermont to pack everything and put the house on the market and then to Florida to buy EVERYTHING they'll need to build and furnish the restaurant. Bob is back in Anguilla supervising the construction. This is all Very Expensive. Just the customs duty on everything was staggering. Luckily, they had sold their former business which provided them with the dollars they needed--although, they came perilously close to running out of money.

The Blanchards respect and care for the people of Anguilla is obvious. The people of Anguilla seem to have accepted the Blanchards as citizens and friends. In fact, they still have most of the staff they originally hired when they started the restaurant.

I especially enjoyed the sailboat race story. Bob was asked to help build and crew a boat for some locals. He was thrilled to be asked. When he asked about how they were going to get a sail the group told him they hoped he would pay for it. "How much"? he asks. They tell him ,400 and he says, "OK"!

The Blanchards worry about their son in college in Washington state, but there are no long winded boring phone conversations with him as someone else reported.

This book is not at all a "cure for insomnia" in fact, I found the opposite to be true. I stayed up too late reading it.

While I'm not sure I would like the Blanchards if I knew them and I'm a little disappointed that their newest venture means they can't spend much time on the island they wanted to spend the rest of their lives on--I still loved the book.

I love this cookbook and these ladies. All the recipes I've tried have been yummy, easy and nutritious. I'm not very comfortable in the kitchen, am not a very good cook and really struggle with what to make for my family for dinner each night. I found Janice and Liz's podcast this summer and loved it. They mentioned their book so I got it right away. It's my favorite cookbook--and I've bought lots because I need lots of help. After making several of their recipes (and having good results), I feel more comfortable in the kitchen, cook more often and am willing to try foods and ingredients that I would have been too intimidated to try before. I know they are working on their next cookbook and I'm looking forward to getting it as soon as it comes out.

In the second book, the hints begin to show up. To understand the Sherri thing (and see the hint dropping begin), I would read the first book, as it is a total shock in the second one. But then, the Chaz thing...you can see it coming. Maybe it's not a sure thing, but there are some subtle hints here and there, the biggest one being the fact that he is mentioned and discussed at length at all, as opposed to simply being the background character he was in the first book. The pattern of break-ups is painfully annoying, and feels like Andrew (and by extension, Luke) should never have even been mentioned, that maybe the story should have just been about Lizzie, Sherri, and Chaz to start from, instead of complicating things and as a result, making it repetitive and boring.

If you've always thought that well-bred Southern women "of a certain age" spent their retirements wearing straw hats, gardening and drinking sweet tea then let Patricia Anne Hollowell set you straight.

Patricia Anne ("Mouse") and her older sister Mary Alice ("Sister") are polar opposites - both in appearance and temperament. When the impulsive and flamboyant Sister buys a country-western bar, sensible Mouse is only slightly surprised. But even the unflappable Mouse gets more than she bargained for when the owner of the Scoot 'n' Boot is murdered and one of her former students is looking a lot like a suspect. Can the two Steel Magnolias get to the bottom of things without indulging in some murderous thoughts of their own?

This was a thoroughly enjoyable "cozy". I liked Patricia Anne's narrative which was liberally dotted with her wry (and very funny) observations on marriage, children and (of course) the unique bond of sisterhood. The southern atmosphere and domestic details more than make up for the less than scintillating mystery. And let's be honest - that's what you read a "cozy" for anyway, isn't it?

No swearing or sexual content - nothing that I wouldn't be comfortable having my teenager (or my 82 year old Mother) read.

"Emily's Runaway Imagination" is about a young girl named Emily who lives in Pitchfork, Oregon. Pitchfork is a small town with not that many people. Only a few people have cars, which is strange, and they uses horses to get around. Emily has a very active imagination which she uses when she is bored, with a lot of nothing to do. The worst thing about Pitchfork is that there is no library. Emily's cousin Muriel read "Black Beauty" from her library and that made Emily jealous. So Emily and her imagination started to find ways to bring a library to pitchfork.

One of the crazy things Emily does is she tries to Chlorox her father's horse to make it white instead of black. I think it is strange that a kid was able to get her hands on bleach and do all of that without her parents knowing.

Thanks to her mom's help, Emily is able to get a library in her town after they write a letter to the mayor. But nobody brings "Black Beauty," so Emily uses money she won to buy it herself. I liked Emily a lot because she was very real, but I didn't understand a lot of her imagination. Plus, there were too many people in the book and I got lost sometimes trying to keep up. Either way, it was fun to read "Emily's Runaway Imagination" by Beverly Cleary, about a kid with a crazy imagination and to see what life was like before television. I don't know what I would do if there was no library where I lived and I think it's cool that Emily got one.

Why bubble baths? Because I, like everyone else, wanted to see what happens behind that door when a lovely girl undresses and takes a bath. Andrew Einhorn is one of the the most under-celebrated art photographers working today. Despite the success of his first book, Naked Happy Girls, as well as having his own underground cable show in New York City, his name has garnered only a fraction of the acclaim that many of his peers have. This might partly be due to Einhorn's own posturing - he's a very lighthearted individual and comes across as one who doesn't take himself or his work too seriously. His self-effacing humor is actually quite refreshing in this industry, where everyone seems to be jockeying for attention, but it has not gotten him the media exposure and critical acclaim that he so rightly deserves. With that said, if he needs a bulldog to do his barking, I'll gladly take the podium. Andrew Einhorn is one of the most electrifying and inventive artists working in the medium today. What his work lacks in superficiality and pretense is more than made up for in pure, reality-based, let's-have-a-good-time portraiture. Einhorn is 100% original and with all due respect to Evander Holyfield, he's the real deal.

And so we have Bubble Bath Girls, Einhorn's new book of nude photographs. Fans of his first book will love this second outing, in that it continues in the same festive vein as the first but with two notable differences. First, it's shot entirely in color (Naked Happy Girls was all black & white) and second, it's mostly staged around a single area of the household - the bathroom. Einhorn's fascination for wet, glistening skin, soapy hair, and bubbles plays out well here. And his talent for casting a beautiful potpourri of models from various ethnic backgrounds is absolutely charming. There is no pouting or posturing or attitude within these pages - all of the girls are absolutely natural and real ... and they appear to really be having fun. That's what's so powerful about this work - the viewer feels like they are part of a real experience. Einhorn's genius is that he's able to craft this atmosphere without appearing like it's forced. He doesn't get in the way. For everyone involved; the girls, Einhorn, and the viewer, it's pure joy. At just under 400 pages Bubble Bath Girls is an in-depth and marvelous experience. Hopefully it will propel Einhorn to the level of fame and notoriety that's his due.
